What is GOST in simple terms?
The abbreviation GOST stands for ‘state standard’ and refers to a document that establishes requirements for a specific category of products in one or more countries.

Why do businesses and customers need GOST standards?
Standards in the form of GOSTs are necessary so that manufacturers have a uniform and clear understanding of what a quality product should be, and so that buyers can evaluate goods based on the presence or absence of such a quality mark.

What type of document is GOST?
GOST is a regulatory legal act. It does not have the force of law and is advisory in nature. The application of GOST is voluntary, unless otherwise specified directly in the law.

GOST R and GOST — what is the difference?
The GOST mark means that a product or service complies with standards established in the USSR and still in force in the CIS countries. The abbreviation GOST R means that the standard has been introduced in modern Russia and is applied on its territory.

Who introduces GOSTs in Russia?
GOSTs are developed and implemented by technical committees of the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart).

What are KGS and OKS?
There is a single list of GOSTs applicable in Russia. Until 2000, it was called the Classifier of State Standards (KGS), and then it was changed to the All-Russian Classifier of Standards (OKS). However, the abbreviation KGS is still in use.
