New GOST on color marking of products - voluntarily or forcibly?

FIC (Federal Research Center) of Nutrition and Biotechnology has developed a new GOST labeling product. This standard is currently at the stage of approval and approval. Graphic labeling of products is scheduled for October 2019.

According to the document, color marking on the package will inform the consumer about the content of sugar, salt and fat in products. The draft interstate standard includes the following parameters:
- color marking should contain information about the mass fraction in the products of critical nutrients - table salt, free sugars, fats and trans fats;
- graphic warnings will be placed on the packaging or label. They are vertical stripes, each of which corresponds to one of the critically important nutrients. Depending on the salt, sugar or fat content, the strip should be colored red, yellow or green.

The requirements of the standard will not apply to raw materials and products with a homogeneous composition: for example, sugar, butter, bacon. Also, the label “traffic light” is not planned to be applied to the packaging of drinking water, food additives and specialized products (for example, medical), as well as confectionery, beverages with sweeteners and cheeses.

We pay attention that now graphic warnings are not stipulated by the technical regulation "Food products regarding its labeling". However, manufacturers fear that with time marking will become mandatory. This is indirectly confirmed by the FIT of nutrition: an interstate standard can serve as a basis for creating standards in this area.

In the summer of 2017, Rospotrebnadzor suggested that the countries participating in the Eurasian Economic Union make the “traffic light” marking mandatory and make the necessary amendments to the technical regulations. But the idea was criticized, deciding that such a demand would provoke a rise in prices for products.
It is assumed that the document will be valid in the countries of the Eurasian Council for Standardization - Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
